LesterMillman's presentation:
Millman speaks about the first few days after the World Trade Center Attack on 9-11-01 in New York City. He was there at Ground Zero, by the 'pile,' from the first night through to the 'MARCH OUT' May 30, 2002. Lester photographed the disaster with his feet in the gray ash. The images are haunting as is his narration of the events, the effort of a photojournalist who has covered other wars and as a father whose family was only 25 miles away. All the images in the presentation were made by Lester Millman.
As the sole photographer to Governor George E. Pataki, Millman had access that was unavailable to others, Ground Zero was a crime scene and was closed to most civilians. His almost daily trips into the zone were carefully documented. Using the best digital equipment available at the time, with lenses from 16mm to 560mm he worked around firefighters, construction people, politicians (including the President and Vice President) as they came to Ground Zero in an attempt to understand the unbelievable, 2752 dead (original reports), over 10 million square feet of space destroyed and a city and country that wouldn't give in.
Millman's images appear on the www, in the original 'time line' posted at Ground Zero and at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY, numerous publications have used his work from this horrible time.
In conclusion he will speak on the amazing recovery of our city, state and country. How we pulled together public and private to clean out the sacred ground in only 10 months.
Lester J. Millman has been a photojournalist throughout his career. His pictures have been used in Time, Newsweek (cover), the New York Times, the Jerusalem Post and most major American and European news publications.
